Frequently Asked Questions

HOW EXACTLY DO STAIR CHAIR LIFTS WORK?

All stairs run on a track, which is usually aluminum. The track is attached directly onto the treads of your stairs with lag bolts, approximately every third tread. The track is NOT bolted to the wall of your staircase, only to the treads.

The motor in the stair lift then drives the chair either up or down the track. You control the direction and motion with a "continuous-pressure" control switch on the armrest of the lift, while you're safely seated in place.

HOW LONG DO STAIR LIFTS TAKE TO INSTALL?

Generally, they are installed in a few hours.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY STAIR LIFT DURING A POWER OUTAGE?

Most lift motors are now powered using Direct Current (DC) batteries, which will automatically charge when not in use, and will temporarily act as a backup during a power outage.

ARE STAIR LIFTS NOISY?

Installed correctly, modern DC-powered stair lifts are very energy efficient and quiet.

WILL MY STAIRCASE STILL BE USEABLE AFTER THE LIFT IS INSTALLED?

Yes. When not in use, your stair lift will be parked at the top or bottom of the staircase, and you can then fold the stair lift seat, arms and footrest into a vertical position. This will conserve space to allow other people to pass by and walk up and down your stairs.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM WEIGHT A STAIR LIFT CAN CARRY?

This varies depending on the manufacturer and model. Many stair lifts can safely carry a maximum of 300 lbs. More robust models with a capacity of up to 400 lbs. are also available.
